PCI Peripheral Component Interconnect Bus The PCI bus was introduced in 1992 as a standardised internal expansion port to add expansion cards into a computer.
PCI cards allowed for addition of many different types of expansion cards, ranging from network cards to modems, TV tuner cards to additional IO ports to name but a few.
PCI was the de-facto standard for internal expansion for many years for all types of expansion except Graphics Cards although PCI Graphics cards were available.
Bus speed is usually 33.
Cards were Keyed depending which type of card was compatible.
Keying — a term used to describe making a card or connector only able to connect one way or in a compatible slot.
Eg PC expansion cards PCI, PCI-X, PCI-E, DIMM memory modules etc.
On a connector, a keyed connector will only egypt and play free rome slot machine one way up.

This faster and wider bus allowed for increase data throughput and was most often used in high end workstations and Servers.
A PCI-X Card PCI and PCI-X are compatible with each other meaning if you insert a PCI card into a PCI-X slot, this will also slow the bus.
If you expansion buses and slots a PCI-X card into a PCI slot, Only 32 bits are accessible and although the card will work, it will only be able to manage 32 bits and the performance will be greatly inhibited.
For this reasons computers would usually be built with a PCI and expansion buses and slots PCI-X bus on the motherboard.
PCI Express PCIe Introduced in 2004, PCIe was designed to replace all common connection buses PCI, PCI-X, AGP with a new, faster standard.
Gradually the older buses have been replaced and PCIe is has become the most common standard for upgrade cards, although PCI does still appear on some older machines and occasionally for legacy for blade and soul char slots not on newer hardware.
Whereas the PCI Bus was a parallel bus, the PCIe bus is serial.
In essence this means that the bus is split into separate lanes expansion buses and slots individual communication routesproviding a direct communication link to each component.
To allow for even faster connections, lanes can be linked together to generate faster speeds.
A PCIe x16 slot simply has 16 lanes joined together to deliver a faster throughput.
Throughput PCIe Version ×1 ×4 ×8 ×16 1.
PCIe x8 and x16 are usually used for Graphics Adapters, although a x1 or x4 card can be placed into a larger slot.
If you insert a PCIe x1 card into a PCIe x16 slot it will work absolutely fine but will only work at the speed of the card x1.
Although technical sound, this could easily be seen as a waste of resources.

However, there is often a desire to be able to add expansion cards to mobile devices such as a laptop.
Using an expansion card rather than integrating a component into the laptop motherboard allows room for future expansion and upgradeability.
For instance my laptop currently contains a PCIe 802.
By installing this on the Expansion buses and slots bus it is upgradeable, and I can change it to a PCIe 802.
I also have added a PCIe SSD into the laptop for high speed storage.
Clearly, I cannot add standard PCI or PCIe cards into a laptop, they are far too big and bulky.
Instead the laptop contains a couple of Mini PCIe slots.
These provide exactly the same connectivity as described previously but in a small form factor.
Examples of Mini PCI and Mini PCIe are shown below.
AGP was a standard defined for Graphics Adapters working alongside the PCI bus on older systems.
In essence the AGP bus was based on the PCI architecture.
This offered multiple connections to a single slot to carry data quickly and directly to the Graphics Adapter.
Although much faster than PCI, PCIe x16 performs considerably faster than the final versions of AGP.
This has meant that the AGP bus has become virtually obsolete today.
